In our fast-paced world, staying true to ourselves can feel like a challenge. Yet, authenticity – that deep sense of alignment with who we truly are – is essential for our well-being and fulfilment.
But what drives authenticity? It often stems from living in accordance with our values. When we reflect on what truly matters, we discover what gives us a sense of being real and grounded. Science tells us that we have three psychological needs: competence or mastery, autonomy, and relatedness; which must be met to feel motivated and experience wellbeing. We thrive when we develop mastery over tasks that are important to us.
Three tips to tap into your authenticity through your values
1. Identify Your Core Values
Take a moment to reflect on what truly matters to you. Is it integrity, compassion, creativity, or community? Recognising your core values is the first step to authenticity. When you make decisions aligned with these values, you’ll naturally feel more grounded and true to yourself. Nudge: Listen to this great podcast with Brene Brown and Barrett Guillen.
2. Align Actions with Values
It’s one thing to know your values, but it’s another to live by them. Regularly ask yourself: Are my actions today in line with what I value? Whether it’s speaking up for a cause you believe in or showing kindness, aligning actions with values enhances your sense of authenticity. If not, what's causing the misalignment? Nudge: Consider journalling instances where you feel you actions are not aligned with your values. What happened? How did you feel? What patterns are there over time?
3. Practise Self-Compassion
Authenticity doesn’t mean perfection. When we make mistakes, being kind to ourselves can help us stay true to our values of self-growth and kindness. Let self-compassion be part of your value system to maintain your authentic self. Nudge: Practical Optimism by Dr Sue Varma, is a great read and helpful in cultivating self-compassion.
Values are a key part of fostering a life that feels true, meaningful, and authentic.
