Neuro Nudges and the GROW model
Neuro Nudges can be seamlessly integrated into coaching sessions using the GROW model.
What is the GROW model?
The GROW coaching model is a widely used framework that provides a structured approach to goal-setting and problem-solving. It was popularised by Sir John Whitmore in the 1980s and has since become a foundation in coaching practice.
The acronym "GROW" stands for:
Goal: This phase involves clarifying the client's objectives or what they want to achieve during the coaching session. This stage is crucial for setting a clear direction for the coaching process.
Reality: Here, the client examines their current situation or reality. This involves a candid assessment of where they are in relation to their goals, identifying obstacles, strengths, resources, and any limiting beliefs or assumptions that may be hindering progress. It's about gaining a clear understanding of the gap between where they are now and where they want to be.
Options (or Opportunities): In this phase, the client explores various strategies, approaches, and possibilities for bridging the gap identified in the Reality phase. The coach encourages brainstorming, creative thinking, and considering alternative perspectives. It's about generating a range of potential solutions or actions that could help the client move closer to their goals.
Wrap up (way forward or will): the final phase focus on developing a concrete plan of action. The client selects specific steps or strategies from the Options phase and commits to implementing them. The coach helps the client establish accountability mechanisms, set deadlines, and overcome any remaining doubts or hesitations. It's about creating a clear pathway forward and ensuring the client is motivated and empowered to take action.
The GROW model provides a structured framework for coaching conversations, guiding clients through a systematic process of goal setting, problem-solving, and action planning. It emphasises the importance of clarity, self-awareness, creativity, and commitment in achieving desired outcomes.
Using Neuro Nudges and GROW
- During the contracting phase, the coach and client agree to use Neuro Nudges throughout the session.
- In the Goal and Reality phase, the Neuro Nudges coaching questions can help facilitate clarity regarding the client's goals and encourage them to dream.
- During the focused part of the coaching conversation (Options and Wrap Up), the cards can suggest behavioural nudges to encourage the client to identify different options or paths. The neuro-insight on the back of each card can prompt reinforcement of the client’s chosen actions.
Other ways to use Neuro Nudges and GROW
Alternatively, the cards can be introduced at the end of a GROW cycle, particularly if the session has been less fluid than usual. Introducing the cards and their associated coaching questions can stimulate new ideas and approaches toward achieving the coaching goal. They can also serve to "sense check" the GROW approach used in the session, uncovering additional insights.
