A neuro nudges coaching card with the question from the emotions category: "In a year from now how will your current worries be impacting you?" A nudge follows that describes the three Ps.

How Will Today’s Worries Affect You in a Year?

It’s one of my favourite coaching questions—especially for the worriers among us.

The Power of Perspective in Coaching

Inspired by Martin Seligman’s research on resilience and positive psychology, this nudge helps shift focus away from immediate worries or challenges. It encourages a broader, more pragmatic perspective on the issue at hand.

Why This Question Works

Neuroscience shows us that a strong sense of agency and self-efficacy boosts resilience. It enables people to adapt, overcome obstacles, and grow from challenges. This question encourages reflection, creating space for resilience to flourish.

Deepening the Conversation

Follow-up questions can help you unpack the issue even further:

  • Will this still feel as significant in a month?
  • What have you learned from similar situations in the past?
  • How can you use this as an opportunity for growth?

It’s Not About Being Unrealistically Positive

Let’s be clear: this isn’t about ignoring challenges or being a “Pollyanna.” It’s about taking a pragmatic approach to assess whether the worry will hold long-term weight and exploring strategies to build resilience.

This coaching approach is equally effective in professional settings and personal conversations.
